And you think your alarm clark is bad...
For those of you who had put the Barclary block party on their calendars, you missed it. It happened last night (or I guess more appropriately this morning) at 4:30 am. I woke up to this horrendous ringing noise. At first I thought it was my alarm. Then I was disoriented. Then I realized it was a fire alarm. SIGH.
So at first I lay there waiting for it to shut off. No luck. I drag myself out of bed, pop my head into the hallway, and kind of look for either a) raging flames b) smoke. As there were none of either, I ignored the continued ringing and got back in bed. Never mind that just because I didn't see anything didn't mean there wasn't something burning down.
Then I started thinking about how I could be endangering my life so I decided I should probably leave the building. The next decision: get dressed, or appear in public in some sleeping ensemble. I looked at my Ramadan robe (hana, you know what it is) which is so named because it is the big fluffy red robe I wear in Ramadan when I wake up early to eat. I thought about putting it on...but then I decided that even in these times of dire danger, dignity comes first.
So I got dressed and walked out (thinking to myself I was the only one actually exiting the building), when in fact I turned out to be the last one to exit the building. I think I was sleepwalking because I literally walked into the crew of firemen in the hallway. And when I got outside, oh, was there a treat waiting for me! There before my very eyes were the Barclay residents in their various and sundry sleep ensembles. It was awesome. There was one man who wasn't wearing a shirt and just I guess threw on some jeans. Hmmm. Please, let's not pretend we didn't have time to grab a shirt. There were all these old women wearing, well, old women sleep wear and chatting excitedly. There was me, sitting on the front step, practically asleep.
Turned out there was no fire. But it was too much excitement for me. And now that I have met my neighbors, I don't know if the block party is really still that high on the agenda. Renee I almost came and woke you up just cause. It wasn't fair that you were sleeping....
